Perhaps the most important development this week is that the Assam government has made up its mind to confirm most of the contractual teachers in schools, which will act as a relief to many employing contractual engineers.
This decision, which has been approved by the Cabinet, is to kick-start a new special exercise for recruitment to cement the appointment of these teachers.
Key Decisions and Impact
It is in this context that a meeting of the Cabinet held at the Nalbari district administration revealed the following course of action: Among them are contract teachers, whom the government has decided to regularize. This is expected to assist about 35,133 teachers in the Sarva Shikasha Abhiyan (SSA) and State Pool.
Special Recruitment Drive
Sarma stated that the government has agreed to start a new recruitment scheme to absorb 35,000 SSA teachers into mainstream government teachers’ employment.
The result is generating new government-employed posts, which in turn offer help to these teachers, who at the moment cannot be restored due to existing rules. Indeed, the respective recruitment drive shall only be open to teachers who are hired by SSA.
Benefits for Regularized Teachers
Once recruited, these teachers will receive several benefits, including
- Joining the National Pension Scheme (NPS)
- Government salary scales
- Annual salary increments
- Other government-provided benefits
