Renaming Airports: Darbhanga Airport Among 22 Proposed Changes
Reducing expenditure can be of different degrees, from a general reduction of spending across the whole civil aviation industry to a more specific cut on certain departments or projects within a civil aviation company.
Cutting down the budget for the Civil Aviation Ministry, she has provided ₹ Rs. 2,357.14 crore for the ongoing financial year. It is lower than the 2,922.12 crore for 2023-24 indicated in the budget. Also, there is a decline in the budget of regional connectivity by ₹348 crore from ₹850 crore for core operations.
22 Airports That Might Be Renamed
The Civil Aviation Ministry has recently received mail from the 10 states seeking permission to rename 22 of the airports. Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, said that while it is normally that airports are named after the city in which they are located, names suggested by a state government require approval by a resolution passed by the legislative assembly of the particular state. These proposals are then scrutinized by other ministries before the final decision is presented and arrives at the Union Cabinet.
Names of Airports Proposed by States
The Andhra Pradesh government has proposed the renaming of three airports, the Tirupati airport in particular, for instance, to ‘Sri Venkateswara Airport’.
Earlier, the Bihar government recommended renaming the Darbhanga Airport as ‘Vidyapati Airport’.
In September 2019, Maharashtra sought permission to rename its airport as ‘Shree Sai Baba International Airport’.
Other states, including Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh, have also made similar attempts for different airports of their own, respectively.
Future Considerations
While addressing these proposals, the Civil Aviation Ministry still seems to be apprehensive about the consequences of the budget commission on airport development as well as the general accessibility across various regional networks.
